The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of abdominal exercises on abdominal fat. Participants, 24 sedentary subjects (14 men and 10 women) between 18 and 40 years, were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 following groups: control group (CG) and abdominal exercise group (AG). Anthropometry, body composition, and abdominal muscle strength were tested before and after training.

AG performed 7 abdominal exercises, performing 2 sets of 10 repetitions for each exercise. The AG group had 5 training sessions a week for 6 weeks. The CG did not receive any intervention. All participants followed an iso-caloric diet throughout the study period. Significance set at p = 0.05 for all tests. There was no significant effect on body weight, body fat percentage, percentage of android fat, amount of android fat, abdominal circumference, skin folds (abdominals and supraylates). A significant post-test difference in terms of muscular resistance was found (curl-up repetitions AG 47 ± 13 and CG 32 ± 9).
